Mrs Eira Moroney

Nurse

Eira Moroney (class of 1982) is a nurse and midwife. Her work has taken her all over Australia. She trained in nursing at the Royal Women's hospital and then worked in Western Australia. After moving back to Brisbane she completed her midwifery training and worked as a nurse at the Mater Children's Hospital and then at the Royal Children's Hospital, assisting liver transplants.

Later, Eira moved to Alice Springs for three years, working in the Alice Springs Hospital. During this time, she also did community work as a midwife for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Eira then continued her work as a midwife in Adelaide, and finally in Brisbane from 1996. She also teaches antenatal classes.

Something that Eira Moroney has really enjoyed throughout her career is the opportunity to travel. In addition to working throughout Australia, Eira has travelled to do voluntary work in Zambia and also Nepal, where she left all her medical supplies to support a small clinic in the Annapurna mountains.

Eira believes that working in rural and regional areas in Australia and not specialising in any particular section of her field too early, helped her gain useful experience and opportunities, and she would advise students to do the same. She also explained that "being able to talk to anybody" is a really valuable skill for connecting with patients.

Eira has always been interested in sports. When she graduated from high school, there weren't as many opportunities and degrees such as exercise physiology and sports management that there are today in the sports field. She has experienced working with many children with disabilities in her career as a midwife and is now considering moving into sports and the Paralympics to work on increasing accessibility of sports for children with disabilities. It is something she is very passionate about.

Eira believes her love of this industry began during her time at Brisbane State High, where she played many sports including swimming and hockey.

Eira gave valuable insight into her life at State High, saying that in many ways, it was different. They had segregated core classes until year 10, a much stricter uniform policy and a fountain in the B block courtyard! Despite this, Eira says that State High is "still the same school", with students living all over Brisbane and lots of cultural diversity.

The class of 1982 is a really connected class, with a Facebook group and lots of reunions. Eira cherishes the friendships she made at the school and commented on how you can always find State High alumni wherever you go and in all fields of work, so those lasting connections are really valuable.
