Dr James Lergessner

Historian / Author

Dr James Lergessner graduated from State High in 1963. He has enjoyed a career spanning educational, historical and musical pursuits. During his time at State High, he developed a deep sense of belonging within his community, a bond which has guided his career and life.

Following high school, James initially began tertiary education at a teaching college in Brisbane. He then moved to Canada and completed a Masters of Arts at the University of Toronto, majoring in history, and then a PhD from the University of Alberta with funding from the Canadian government for his research. After these degrees, he moved back to Australia and began lecturing in History at the University of Western Australia. James also pioneered teaching diplomas in Queensland and New South Wales, training TAFE teachers in the industry.

Dr Lergessner established the QUT Business Foundation for international students, providing non-native English speakers with the ability to learn English before commencing their business degrees. Much of James' success has also been in the field of historical writing. He published his first book with Boolarong Press in 1993. His most famous books have communicated stories of his upbringing, such as The Brisbane I Used to Know and Cloudland — Queen of the Dancehalls.

His time at State High forms the backbone of these works, depicting his place within Brisbane's evolving community. James has leveraged his historical expertise in the arts, collaborating with local Brisbane musicians and creating interactive shows. He performed one of these shows at the 50 Year Alumni Celebration.

A highlight of James' State High experience was playing rugby union. Through sport, James was able to establish close ties with the community and with the State High Principal at the time, George Lockie. Connecting with community is one of James's core values, and it has given his personal and professional endeavours deeper meaning and satisfaction.
