Dr Tu Huynh
General Practitioner
Dr Tu Huynh (class of 1992) was born in Vietnam and came with his parents to Australia as refugees in 1979. After attending State High, Tu graduated (as one of the first OP students) from UQ in 1998 with an MBBS and spent 4 years at Ipswich General Hospital. After gaining a lot of experience in emergency medicine, ICU, ophthalmology and the normal rotations in hospital, Tu decided general practice would be the next path to follow.
When he thinks about his time at State High, Tu recalls his English teacher, Ms Francis, advising him to explore a "people-oriented" career as before then, Tu had aspirations to become an engineer.
Tu was also involved in many extra curricular activities, both school organised or organised by the students themselves and remembers running around on the oval playing ball games and hanging around the lower quad or in front of the then library. Tu played volleyball for State High with Mr Moo as the coach and is still playing competitive volleyball now.
These days, Tu enjoys the day to day of general practice, being able to help sick people, care for the general community and teaching medical students. Tu has two daughters, both of which also attend State High, and looks forward to the end of travel restrictions so he can get back to his new found love of skiing.
Tu's advice to current students is to "enjoy your time at high school, it goes by very quickly. Form those friendships that hopefully will last for the rest of your life time. I still have a couple of people I keep in contact with from BSHS".
